Kevin Gates has a knack for saying and doing things that are discussion-worthy and often eyebrow-raising. The 37-year-old rapper recently came under fire for teaching his 10-year-old daughter how to drive without having her wear a seatbelt.
The Baton Rouge, La., artist posted an Instagram video on Monday (Oct. 23) from the passenger seat while his daughter, Islah, operated a motor vehicle. “You can give it a little gas, go about 20 [miles per hour],” Gates said to her as she drove. “Keep that motherf**ker in a row. You got that bi**h, Is[lah]. Come on mane, I’m telling you, you got it. Just like you drive the other sh*t.”
This was a tender moment for the “2 Phones” rapper, evident in his caption for the post. “When you love what you have – you have everything you need,” he wrote. “These moments are the ones worth more than anything to a Father #islah says I’m a pretty cool dad – I love you all.” Instagram users acknowledged the significant father-daughter moment but were concerned for her safety.
“This cool and all but bra put her seatbelt on,” one user wrote. “Cool… but why no seat belt?!” another person said. “She did good!! Just needs her seatbelt on no [matter] how slow she’s going anything can happen,” one more user echoed.
There were some people in Kevin Gates’ comments who defended him. “Y’all know damn well 90% of y’all don’t wear yall seatbelts on the regular,” one person said. “Talk [on the phone], text, drink etc but worried about her seatbelt… You going to die when it’s your time regardless of the measures you take. She straight.” Another user told on themselves, writing, “I ain’t saying nothing about a seatbelt bc I’m driving now without wearing mine” with a shrug emoji.
Kevin Gates may have some concerning methods as a driving instructor, but his fans haven’t had to be concerned about when new music is coming. He has been active all throughout 2023, dropping The Luca Brasi Story (A Decade Of Brasi) at the top of this past February and Stranger Than Fiction back in July. Earlier this month, the father of four shared his latest single “God Slippers,” which, much like his last two singles prior to that, was packaged alongside his July release “I Don’t Apologize.” Check out the “I Don’t Apologize” video below.
