He is a former professional boxer, competing in the light-heavyweight and heavyweight divisions, and being the world champion as well as an Olympic gold medalist. He is also known as the only one who defeated Larry Holmes twice. His professional career began in 1977.

After working as a toilet cleaner in a chemical factory, he became a professional boxer in 1977, with persuasion from Butch Lewis.

He also became a Lineal light heavyweight and heavyweight champion, defending his titles multiple times against various opponents such as Vonzell Johnson, Murray Sutherland, Jerry Celestine, Dwight Muhammad Quawi, Steffen Tangstad, and Gerry Cooney.
